What Is a Salt Chlorine Generator and How Does It Work?
A salt chlorine generator adds a low concentration of salt to the pool (typically 3,000–4,500 ppm), then passes the water through an electrolysis cell to produce chlorine electrochemically. This provides continuous, automatic disinfection without manually adding bagged or tablet chlorine. The water is far less salty than seawater.
How Does the Electrolysis Process Work?
Salted water passes between titanium plates inside the generator's electrolytic cell. A low-voltage current splits the salt (NaCl) to produce sodium hypochlorite (chlorine). After this chlorine performs disinfection in the pool, it reverts back to salt — and the cycle repeats continuously.
