Does a Salt Chlorine Generator Damage the Pool or Equipment?
A properly sized and well-maintained salt chlorine system does not damage the pool. However, if salt levels are kept too high, unprotected metal fittings are used, or the system is undersized, corrosion and scale buildup on the electrolysis cell can occur over time.
How to Prevent the Risks
Salt levels should be kept within the manufacturer's specified range (typically 3,000–4,500 ppm), metal fittings around the pool (ladders, handrails) should be stainless steel or properly coated, and the cell should be periodically cleaned of scale/calcium buildup.
Correct sizing is the most critical step: a generator undersized for the pool volume both underproduces chlorine and runs constantly at maximum output, shortening the cell's lifespan.
