What's the Difference Between a Skimmer Pool and an Overflow Pool?
In skimmer pools, surface water is drawn through skimmer openings at the pool edge and sent to filtration; the water level sits slightly below the deck. In overflow pools, water continuously spills into perimeter channels and collects in a balance tank; the water level is flush with the edge, giving superior surface skimming.
When Is Each System the Right Choice?
Skimmer systems have a lower upfront cost and are the common choice for villa/residential pools. Overflow systems are preferred where surface skimming is critical — high-traffic commercial, hotel, and olympic racing pools — as well as infinity pools, where the flush water-to-deck line is an aesthetic priority.
Because an overflow system always requires a balance tank, it needs more plant room space and a higher investment than a skimmer system.
