How Deep Should a Swimming Pool Be?
Family/villa pools are typically designed with a constant depth of 1.20–1.60 m or a graduated depth of 1.0–1.80 m. Diving pools require a minimum of 3.0–3.8 m for safety, while World Aquatics competition standards require a minimum depth of 2.0 m for olympic racing pools.
Choosing Depth by Intended Use
For families with children, the shallow zone is typically kept around 0.90–1.10 m, while the adult swimming area should be planned above 1.40 m. A graduated floor slope is generally preferred over a constant depth for both safety and aesthetics.
Disciplines such as water polo, synchronized swimming, or professional diving have specific depth requirements set by their respective federations.
